Cybersecurity authorities also recommend cutting Internet access for the network under attack. A NAS that is still clean should also be disconnected if it is mounted on those machines.<\/li><li><strong>Do not shut down<\/strong> the affected machines: their memory holds traces useful to the investigation. The ANSSI advises hibernation if encryption is still under way. Do not switch on clean machines that were already off.<\/li><li><strong>Do not pay<\/strong>, and do not reply to the ransom message before contacting management and, if you have one, your insurer. As the ANSSI points out, payment does not guarantee you will obtain a means of decryption.<\/li><li><strong>Call<\/strong> the person who administers your IT and your backup provider. Tell them what has been disconnected.<\/li><li><strong>Photograph<\/strong> the ransom screen (group name, address, file extension). This helps identification and your insurer.<\/li><li><strong>Do not reformat.<\/strong> Encrypted disks may still contain unaffected files and traces. Set them aside once isolated.<\/li><li><strong>Change the passwords<\/strong> of admin accounts, the VPN, email and the backup console <strong>from a phone or a computer that was not on the network<\/strong>, not from a PC that is still suspect.<\/li><\/ol><p>Start an incident log right now: time, action, person. It is recommended to record every action; investigators and your insurer will ask for it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3f5dc82 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3f5dc82\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>In the following hours<\/h2><ul><li><strong>Set up a crisis unit<\/strong>, even a small one: management, IT, legal, communications. The ANSSI stresses the importance of prepared crisis communication, both internal and external.<\/li><li><strong>File a complaint<\/strong> with the police in your country (online where possible), <strong>before<\/strong> reinstalling the machines. Keep the logs, the ransom message and samples of encrypted files.<\/li><li><strong>Notify your cyber insurer<\/strong> before any major restoration if the policy requires it.<\/li><li><strong>Have a notification to the data protection authority assessed<\/strong> in your country (for example the APD in Belgium, the CNPD in Luxembourg or the CNIL in France) if personal data has been compromised. The GDPR (Article 33) requires notification without undue delay and, where feasible, no later than 72 hours after becoming aware of the breach, where it presents a risk to individuals. Even without notification, the incident is recorded in the internal breach register. Your legal adviser confirms the case.<\/li><li><strong>Get guidance<\/strong>: your country&#8217;s national CSIRT (see ENISA&#8217;s map of CSIRTs) can direct you to the right contacts, and the police in your country take the complaint, often online. Neither is a repair service that will restore your systems for you.<\/li><li><strong>Find the start date<\/strong>: accounts created, scheduled tasks, first file extension. The backup to restore is older than that date.<\/li><li><strong>Check that the backup console itself has not been wiped.<\/strong> If the copy is immutable or offline, it should still be there. The <a href=\"\/en\/drp-offer\/\">DRP<\/a> lets you restart your servers on standby instances from the chosen version; activation in a disaster is billed per day. Cybersecurity authorities recommend not shutting down affected machines in order to preserve evidence, and disconnecting them from the network. The ANSSI, France&#8217;s national cybersecurity agency, suggests hibernation if encryption is still under way. Machines that were already off and are clean should stay off.<\/p><\/details><details><summary>Should you pay the ransom to get your data back?<\/summary><p>European and national authorities advise against it, as does the No More Ransom project (Europol and partners). Payment guarantees neither the key, nor that it will work, nor that there will be no further attack, and it funds the attackers. The decision lies with management, but it is not made on the spot, and never without first checking the state of the backups.<\/p><\/details><details><summary>Who must be informed, and how quickly?<\/summary><p>Your IT provider and your backup provider immediately, your cyber insurer promptly, and the police in your country by filing a complaint before reinstalling. If personal data is affected and there is a risk to individuals, your country&#8217;s data protection authority must be notified within 72 hours (GDPR, Article 33). Your country&#8217;s national CSIRT can point you in the right direction.<\/p><\/details><details><summary>Can a free decryption tool be used?<\/summary><p>Only if it comes from a trusted source, such as the No More Ransom project (Europol and partners), which lists tools for certain ransomware families.
